ART Interview - ONLINE Magazine

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the competition deadline?
The competition is open all year round and prizes are awarded quarterly. Quarter deadlines are on: March 31, June 30, Sept. 30, and Dec. 31. Entries accepted into the competition gallery compete for the winning prize every quarter.

How much does the competition cost?
The current cost to enter 3 artworks into the competition is 25 Euro. Artists participating in the competition receive a FREE subscription to Art Interview Online Magazine for as long as they remain in the competition. Entries are automatically re-entered into competition every quarter at a charge of 25 Euro per quarter. Artists wishing to participate in only one quarter of the competition may remove their works before the beginning of the next quarter to stop charges.

Can I pay some other way than Paypal?
No, we are not able to accept payment in any other form than Paypal.

Is there an age requirement?
Yes. All entrants must be at least 16 years of age.

Can I enter the competition more than once?
Yes. An artist may enter 3 artworks per submission; additional entries (of 3 artworks per submission) will be charged separately at 20 Euro per quarter. Entering more than one set of images gives the artist an added advantage because each set of 3 images is judged separately.

Can I enter if I don't live in the United States?
Yes, the competition is open to artists anywhere in the world, and all receive equal consideration.

Where do I send my slides?
The competition is run completely over the Internet, which eliminates the need for the artists to send slides or arrange for physical transportation of their artworks.

Can I send a digital image of my artwork as an entry?
Yes. All entries, without exception, must be in digital format. Each image must be 72 dpi with a maximum resolution of 1280 x 960 pixels per inch. With hundreds of entries that must be viewed and shipped to jurors easily and efficiently, we need all entries to be in jpg format.

How do I get a digital image of my artwork?
You can hire a professional photographer, or you can photograph the art yourself with a digital camera. You may scan your art work directly or from a photograph using a flat bed scanner.

How important is the quality of the photograph I send?
Extremely important. This is the only exposure to your artwork that our judges will have, and a poor representation such as a blurred image, glare, dim lighting or unnecessary background objects will reduce your chances of winning. We recommend that artworks be photographed without their frames.

How will I know if my entry has arrived and been entered in the competition?
Paypal will send you a confirmation email as soon as your payment has been received. If your PayPal account has been charged you will be able to upload your images at
http://www.art-interview.com/competition_form.html after logging in.

How do I upload my images?
Once again, if your PayPal account has been charged you will be able to upload your images at
http://www.art-interview.com/competition_form.html after logging in.

There is no place to upload my images and I can't read the magazine after I log in. Did I just get ripped off?
No. Check to make sure you are using the log in that you paid for. Some people register with us several times before they pay. Each time you register you are sent a member ID and password but the log in will only give you access to the magazine and competition if the account is paid for. If you have made your payment and you are using the correct log in and still cannot figure out how to upload your images you can write to us at competition@art-interview.com and we will help you.

How do I cancel my subscription?
In order to stop making payments to Art Interview Online Magazine or the Art Interview - International Online Artist Competition you must cancel your original subscription in your Paypal account. To do this go to the history tab in your Paypal account and search for subscriptions within the last year. Click on the original subscription. At the bottom of this subscription is the option to cancel.

How do I find out the results of the competition?
All winners and finalists will be notified at the beginning of the next quarter. Unfortunately we cannot notify the rest of the entrants individually. If you haven't been contacted your entries will remain in the competition for the next quarter and your credit card will be automatically charged the quarter entry fee. The results of the competition will be published in the online magazine at the beginning of each quarter.

Does the public vote determine who wins the competition?
No. A professional jury judges the competition.

Who is on the jury?
The jury members change with each competition. The jury is always composed of a group of five international, professional artists. The individuals of this group normally consist of our Editor in Chief and the main artists interviewed in the last issue of Art Interview Online Magazine.

How can the jury judge what good art is? Isn’t good a matter of opinion?
Our jury awards 100 to 500 points to each artist in 5 major categories: Maturity of Development, Technique, Design, Consistency and Originality. In addition 10 to 50 points are awarded to each artist in 2 categories: their exhibition experience and education. Both are compared to the opportunities available to the artist for their age. Lastly, 1 to 5 points are awarded to each artist for their popularity determined by the public vote.

Should I enter artwork that shows the different styles that I can create or should I keep the art to one style?
Every set of 3 images entered into the competition is considered a separate miniature exhibition of the artist. Consistency is one of the major categories the judges consider. If the artwork is not a consistent style you will score lower than if it were consistent. If you would like to show a variety of styles that you work in we suggest adding them as an additional set of 3 images per style. Each set of 3 images is judged separately and the sets do not need to be consistent.

I did poorly in the last competition. Does that mean I am a bad artist and I will never be a winner?
No. There are 3 factors that can change the results of each competition.
1: Artists have the opportunity to change their images in the competition. If one set of images did poorly another may do better.
2: The artists you are competing against change with each competition.
3: The jury that judges the competition changes every quarter.

If I win an award, what more will I have to provide?
If your entry is chosen as the first place winner, you'll be asked to provide us with an interview which will be published in the magazine. You will also need to provide us with a photograph of yourself in digital format.

If I win an award, how do I get the cash prize?
Cash prizes are issued to the winners' Paypal account.

Is sculpture eligible in the competition?
Yes. For a sculpture entry, we recommend that your photograph shows the work from more than one perspective

Is it possible to submit a print done with techniques like lithography, engraving, intaglio, serigraphy, woodcut, papercut... etc.?
Yes. Printmaking is accepted.

Is black-and-white artwork eligible?
Yes. Black-and-white and monochromatic works done in media such as graphite, ink, charcoal and Conte crayons are welcome in the competition.

Can I enter a photograph?
Photography is now eligible on a case by case basis. Black and white and/or color photography will only be accepted for consideration if is is conceptually based.

Is an artwork containing photographs, or an artwork-enhanced with photographs or photocopied images, eligible?
Yes. Artistic works that use elements of photography, including works created by adding artwork media or collage elements on top of a photograph or photocopied image, will be accepted. Photographs may be used as elements in a multimedia collage.

Is digital or computer-generated artwork eligible?
Digital art is now eligible on a case by case basis.

My artwork is my re-creation of someone else's artwork. Is it eligible?
No. Your entry must be an original, conceived and created only by you. Though all artists take inspiration from one another to some degree, a direct representation of another artist's work will be disqualified from the competition and is in most cases a violation of copyright law.

I've painted a picture of a photo I saw in a magazine. Is it eligible?
No. Artwork based on your own photographs will be accepted, but artwork based on someone else's published photographs will not, and is in most cases a violation of copyright law.

My artwork has been sold. Is it still eligible?
Yes. As long as you're the artist who created it, the ownership status of the artwork is not relevant to the competition, and permission from the owner is not required for entry in the competition unless specific contractual obligations exist between the artist and the owner.
